Trismegistos 60188 = LDAB 1305

Introduction

Hp. Flat. 8-10. The papyrus consists of two fragments (5 x 8.5 cm; 4.5 x 8 cm) belonging to the same roll. On the verso, 35 lines of a single column interrupted by a central lacuna of ca. 2 lines. Top and bottom margins of ca. 1 cm and 1.2 cm, respectively, have survived. The scribe makes repeated use of on-line blank spaces to articulate individual sentences (see ll. 14, 23, 27). The papyrus preserves relevant portions of Hp. Flat. 8-10; its place in the history of the textual tradition of Flat. seems to be quite independent and cannot be related to either of the two branches of the medieval tradition. The text was copied in a severe style and dates back to the 3rd cent. AD. On the recto, scanty remains of two consecutive columns of another medical work drawn up in an informal round hand assignable to the late 2nd cent. AD.

Notes

  • 11-2.

Unlike the verb ἐπανειλέω, ἐπαν[ειλήμα] is never attested.

  • 12-3.

For ἐντεραῖα (or ἐντεριαῖα) ἀπ[οστηρίγματα], see also J. Jouanna, Hippocrate, 5.1, Paris, 1998, 143 and Lami 2008, 108.

  • 19.

Above the omicron of πρός, a descending bar; possibly a rho: [π]ρ̣[ὸς τὰ ὑποχόνδρια] = Hp. Flat. 9.1 (6.104, 10-11L; 116, 4 Jouanna).

  • 24.

For reasons of space, Daris 1972, 79 suggested πειρῶν (Μ, apud Jouanna) instead of πειρῶνται (πειρέονται A) contra Lami 2008, 109.

  • 24-5.

[τοῦ χρωτὸς]: the supplement by Daris 1972, 78 was unmethodic and not persuasive, see Lami 2008, 108.
