Introduction
Medical recipes. Strip from the upper part of a roll (cm 21.5 x 8.4) containing on the recto the final words of one column, a second column complete in breadth, and about half of a third column; the average space between the columns is 1.8 cm. On the verso another two columns written by the same hand rather more carelessly and in a more cursive style. The text preserved on the recto is a collection of gynecological recipes referable to the Hippokratic tradition (see esp. col. ii, ll. 16-9); recipes are separated from one another by parapgraphoi, and occasionally a small blank space is left to indicate the beginning of a new sentence. Other prescriptions are listed on the verso. The hand is cramped and angular, suggesting a very early date (end of the 3rd or first half of the 2nd cent. BC).
