Introduction
Hp. Fract. 37. A severely damaged papyrus fragment (6.7 x 9.5 cm), broken off on all sides except the bottom, where the lower margin survives to a length of 3.2 cm. It preserves the ends of 16 lines from the lower part of the column of a roll, followed on the right edge by barely visible traces of the beginnings of two more lines from the next column. The intercolumniation is ca. 1.7 cm wide. On the back are traces of writing by a different hand, perhaps from a document. The medical text is written on the recto and contains a passage from Hp. Fract. 37 on the dislocation of the knee. The hand is a round informal bookhand of small size with cursive tendencies assignable to the 2nd cent. AD.

The space is too short to accommodate the transmitted text: τὸ δὲ τοῦ βραχίονος ἄρθρον μέγα κτλ. codd., edd.; τοῦ om. Marc. Gr. 269 ( M apud Littré). In the papyrus τοῦ could have been omitted at the beginning of l. 5.

The papyrus must have something different from the text as transmitted, which is οὐδενὸς μεγάλου κώλυμα ἐόν, ἀφ’ οὗ κτλ. (codd.; μεγάλου κώλυματος, ἀφ’ οὗ κτλ. Gal. 18B, 619.5-6 K). Either with οὐδενὸς μεγάλου κώλυμα ἐόν or with οὐδενὸς μεγάλου κώλυματος the papyrus’ text is was different, and evidently longer by two or three letters. For the reading/restoration [ἀφ’ ὁκ]ο̣ί̣ου or [ἀφ’ ὁπ]ο̣ί̣ου see Gal. In Hipp. Fract. Comm. I 1.3 (18B, 355.5-7 K).

The papyrus exhibits the koine Greek πήχεως instead of the Ionic form πήχεος.

Vestiges of a couple of lines, opposite col. I, ll. 13-14. Insofar the remaining traces are decipherable at all, they accommodate the transmitted text as suggested in the apparatus.
