Title Instructions to Collect Sadaqa and Zak��t

Summary N��jid b. Muslim gives ìAbd All�� b. Asìad specific instructions on how to collect the Sadaqa and Zak��t from Muslims in the villages he is responsible for, sealing the money he receives before sending it and gathering in the goats and sheep paid to him. He is told to have the taxes go accompanied by a document recording the names, patronymics, tribes and towns of the tax-payers. The letter starts with religious formulae presenting these taxes as imposed by God on the members of His community. Condition Light brown papyrus. Written in black ink perpendicular to the papyrus fibers on side A, parallel to the fibers on side B. The papyrus is complete on all four sides and the original cutting lines have been preserved on the bottom, top, and partially on the left and right sides. There are several small holes in the papyrus.

Hands The ink has faded in places making lines 10-16 and 27-28 almost completely illegible. F���� has a dot under the letter (l. 20 dufuìa; l. 34 fim��); q��f a dot over the letter (ll. 9, 11, 21 Ȗadaqa; l. 17 taqbida; l. 19 qabadta; l. 26 qabilihi). Shin is written with three dots over the letter (l. 31 shay���an).

Recto: ;1. In the name of God, the Compassionate the Merciful. ;2. From N��jid b. Muslim to ìAbd All��h b. Asìad. ;3. Peace be upon you and I praise for you God ;4. besides Whom there is no god but He. (vac.) ;5. Further, God sent his prophet Muhammad, may he be praised ;6. by God, with the guidance and the true religion and everything ;7. which God ordained for his worshippers. And on those ;8. belonging to the people of the religion of Isl��m, of the right religion ; God imposed ;9. sadaqa o[n the pr]operty of theirs (min amw��lihim) [�Ǫ ;10. . . . ] from God [ . . . ;11. . . . ] know [that . . .] the sadaqa [ . . .] its zak��t ;12. . . . ] through zak[��t . . . ] and on ;16. . . . and through zak[��t . . . ;17. pu]rification of the people of Isl��m until you have received from them ;18. the . . . what God imposed upon them of its zak��t. ;19. Then seal what you have received of it with the seal ;20. which has been brought to you. And whoever agrees from among the collectors ;21. of the tax-levy to hand over the sadaqa according to what you wrote, ;22. give it to him after you have sealed from this (the) dinars ;23. and] collected the free-[grazing] goats and sheep. And give a document (containing) ;24. what you sent to him from this all together and what there was for every ;25. man of that and what you received from him with ;26. his name and the name of his father [and] his tribe and the village ;27. . . . and who . . . ;28. . . . lives . . . ;29. with all that you received from every village so that it will be ;30. together (you combine) combining it with the sadaqa of another village. ;31.
