Introduction

Medical recipe (P.Oxy. LXXX 5250). On the back of P.Oxy. LXXX 5249 , left-hand parts of the first seven lines of a recipe against spreading ulcers. Upper and left-hand margins of about 0.9 cm are preserved. The slanting cursive hand resembles the second hand of P.Oxy. XIV 1697 dated to AD 242. Particularly interesting is the mention of the origin of the recipe from one Herakleides, though it is too common a name to identify the holder. There does not seem to be any reason to think of Heraclides of Tarentum. The recipe itself bears some resemblance to those of Apollonius Mys ap. Gal. Comp.med.loc. 6.9 (= XII 997.13-998.2 K.). For treatments of spreading ulcers see also Archigenes ap. Gal. Comp.med.gen. 4.10 (= XIII 731.14-733.8 K.), Aet. XIV 49-50.
