Introduction

Treatise on optical surgery. The papyrus fragment (18 x 14.5 cm) preserves on the recto along the fibres two columns of text of 27 lines each; the intercolumnium is 2 cm wide and only the lower margin survives. The content deals with suitable treatments in case of ῥευματισμός, or phthisis bulbi, an ocular disease considered to be caused by the flux of humors in the eye. In the first column the author explains three kind of surgery: the περισκυθισμός κατὰ θίξιν (by contact), the ὑποσπαθισμός and the περισκυθισμός κατὰ συνσάρκωσιν (by joining fleshes), used also by the surgeon Heraklides. In the second column the περισκυθισμός κατὰ θίξιν is fully explained through two methods, the first one applied by the surgeon Philoxenos, the second one by a group of alexandrine doctors (Sostratos, Heron, Heracleides, Menodoros) and their followers. In the first column (ll. 6-8) the author alludes to another of his work, which could be identified with the first chapter of Heliodorus’ Χειρουργούμενα (ap. Orib. Coll.med. 46.9 [CMG 6.2.1, 218.34-5 Raed.]). If it is, the text survived on the papyrus could be the second book of his surgical treatise. The hand, quite sloping but elegant, is a small cursive and can be dated to the 3rd century AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Bertonazzi as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = J. Nicole, APF 4, 1908, 147-72; ed.alt. = M.-H. Marganne, "Ophthalmologie", ch. 6; corr. D.S. Crawford, P.FuadUniv. App.1 1).)
