Introduction

Anatomical definition of κεφαλή and medical manual. Fragment (19.5 x 16 cm) of a papyrus roll containing on the recto Hom. Il. 23.877-97; the text is arranged in a single column and copied by an elegant literary hand assignable to the 2nd cent. AD. The large space intentionally left blank on the right suggests this should be the last kollema of the roll. In this empty space a cursive hand drawn up some notes upon the anatomical definition of κεφαλή (‘head’). The verso preserves the first ten lines of an introductory manual for the study of medicine written in a semi-literary hand. The prologue emphazises the need to master anatomical terminology and seems to be closely related to the medical text on the recto.
