Some] opposed [the suggestion that he would be sent] to the Spartans, saying that he did the most strange thing of all, as he didn't dare to tell his fellow citizens what he would say to the enemies, while man usually makes secrets to the enemy. Coming forward, he answered: "These speakers fail the most of what need (to say). If it was in our power, he said, to impose the peace, it wouldn't make any difference that you hear on which conditions I think it would be good for the city that (the peace) be concluded. As however the enemy has become master of the situation, it is not safe to speak about (the peace) at random. Clearly they won't consent to take away anything of the concessions we would make to them, but will attempt to impose even more of them. These people (who spoke before) will give the choice to them, I shall give it to you. - - - in the deliberations about them." Assuming that he was rightly speaking, the people sent him as ambassador plenipotentiary to make the peace. Theramenes, as soon as he had been chosen, sailed to Samos, to meet Lysandros, and attempted to negotiate with him the conditions of the peace.
