Introduction

Medical prescription (PSI Congr. XX 5). Fragment (7.5 x 7 cm) of a papyrus sheet broken on top and right sides, containing on the recto the lower portion of a single column of writing (verso is blank). Left margin 1 cm, lower margin 1,7 cm. A kollesis runs vertically through the middle of the scrap. The text contains the recipe of an ointment (περίχριστος) with astringent effect that may have been useful for treating persisting secretions, probably in connection with eye diseases. Remarkable are the two diplai obelismenai that mark the end of the recipe. The writing is of a small size, neat and careful, of the so-called ʻSevere Styleʼ. The hand may be placed between the late 2nd and the early 3rd cent. AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Margherita Centenari as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (I. Andorlini, PSI Congr. XX 5). Revised by Nicola Reggiani in the framework of the PRIN 2017 Project "Greek and Latin Literary Papyri from Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Fayum (4th BC – 7th AD): Texts, Contexts, Readers" funded by the Italian Ministry of Research (P.I. Prof. Lucio Del Corso, University of Cassino; Local Research Unit at the University of Parma, coordinator: Prof. Nicola Reggiani).)

    The space available in the lacuna occurring at the end of the line seems not sufficient for a π̣[ρὸς] + acc. phrase. π̣[ᾶν ῥεῦμα]: see Gal. Comp.med.sec.loc. 4.8 (12, 748.13-4 K). π̣[ολὺ], or π̣[αχὺ ῥεῦμα], or π̣[ολλὰ ῥεύματα]: see Orib. Syn . 3.139 (CMG 6.3, 103.16-7 Raed.) and 3.121 (CMG 6.3, 99.9 Raed.). π̣[εριωδυνίας]: Gal. Comp.med.sec.loc. 12, 743.15-6 K.

περίχριστος (masculine) is less common than περίχριστον (neuter).
