Introduction

Medical recipes (SPP XX 27 = MPER XIII 4 = SB XVI 13002). The fragment preserves the remains of 12 lines containing two prescriptions, respectively in ll. 1-8 and 9-12. The second one is introduced by a two-line title indented and by a dividing mark. According to a few parallels in Paulus, Oribasius and Aetius, the text seems to record antidotes to be taken internally for various ailments, especially of the stomach. The papyrus is assigned to the 3rd century AD on paleographical grounds.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Francesca Corazza as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous editions (ed.pr. = C. Wessely, SPP XX 27; corr. K.F.W. Schmidt, Philol.Wochenschr. 44, 1924, p. 698 = BL II.2, 158; ed.alt. = H. Harrauer - P.J. Sijpesteijn, MPER NS XIII 4; corr. J. Shelton, ZPE 45, 1982, p. 154; ed.ter. = L.C. Youtie, ZPE 50, 1983, 56-8 = SB XVI 13002). Revised by Nicola Reggiani in the framework of the PRIN 2017 Project "Greek and Latin Literary Papyri from Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Fayum (4th BC – 7th AD): Texts, Contexts, Readers" funded by the Italian Ministry of Research (P.I. Prof. Lucio Del Corso, University of Cassino; Local Research Unit at the University of Parma, coordinator: Prof. Nicola Reggiani).)

Notes

  • 1.

The supplement ἐξοπ[τημένου καὶ] is perhaps more likely than ἐξόπ[του καὶ] for reasons of space.

  • 9.

The supplement ἡ πρὸς τοὺς, suggested according to the comparison with P.Oxy. VIII 1088 .38, is as much plausible as the alternative restoration χυλοῦ ἡ πρὸς found in Paul. VII 5.16.
