Introduction

Medical prescriptions. The papyrus (4,7x7,4 cm) is made up of two joining fragments and is written on the verso (a grammatical fragment, P. Yale 132, on the recto). The writing is across the fibers and runs in a direction opposite to, but right-side up with respect to that on the front. An upper margin of 2 cm survives, but both sides and bottom are broken away. Only a few letters seem to be missing from the ends of the lines, but a considerable amount from the beginnings, so that the purpose of the prescriptions is now lost. The hand is a medium sized, rather heavily made cursive, comparable to Seider, Paläographie I, no. 43. It should probably be assigned to the first half of the third century A.D.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Andrea Bernier and Margherita Centenari as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (S.A. Stephens, P.Yale II 133).)

Notes

  • 1.

κράμβης - for medical use of cabbage see e.g. Gal. 12.42-3 K. and Dsc. MM 2.121-2.

  • 3.

Traces are broken, but a form of διασείω seems more suited to context than a form of σησάμινος.

  • 5.

    ] . τρ̣ου ᾱ̣ ἐλαίου - presumably a liquid measure.
