Introduction

Medical recipes (SB XIV 11964). Papyrus sheet (15.9 x 12.5 cm) that was folded twice vertically and is broken along these folds. The text is written on the recto into two columns, and the impression arises that the papyrus was cut to its present size after the writing was completed. The margins are narrow all around. The papyrus contains three prescriptions for eye ointments (πιλάρια) effective against various ailments such as roughened eyelids, inflammations, inflamed tumors or boils, and defects of the cornea (see Aet. VII 103; Alex.Trall. II 23ff.; Paul. VII 16.11). In all likelihood these recipes were a copy made by a physician for his own use and convenience from a compilation similar to Aet. VII 103, if not from Aetius himself. The two recipes in the first column are separated from each other by means of a row of slanting dashes. The handwriting is typical of the 5th-6th cent. AD.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Margherita Centenari as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (L.C. Youtie, in "Le monde grec (FS Préaux)", pp. 555-63 = SB XIB 11964). Revised by Nicola Reggiani in the framework of the PRIN 2017 Project "Greek and Latin Literary Papyri from Graeco-Roman and Late Antique Fayum (4th BC – 7th AD): Texts, Contexts, Readers" funded by the Italian Ministry of Research (P.I. Prof. Lucio Del Corso, University of Cassino; Local Research Unit at the University of Parma, coordinator: Prof. Nicola Reggiani).)

Notes

  • 2.

The forms ψιμίθιον and ψίμιθος are interchangeable, as shown by the appearance of both at ll. 2, 12, 22.

  • 20.

ἄλλο has been omitted in l. 20 before πιλάριον; more usual would have been the omission of πιλάριον.

  • 24.

[α (ἥμισυ)] is restored from Aet. VII 103. There are no variant readings in the mss. and there is ample space on the papyrus for 2 letters.
