This edition of P.Fay. 242 revises the one published in ZPE 193 (2015) 226-230. It is based on readings proposed by D. Hagedorn to R. Ast in emails from early March 2015. The line notes directly quote (in German) Hagedorn's remarks or summarize them (in English).

    In Z. 1 scheint mir in παρησκεν das Sigma falsch zu sein. Ich lese παρηγκεν und halte das für ein Versehen des Schreibers anstelle von παρήνεγκεν. In der DDbDP findet man sehr zahlreiche zeitgleiche Quittungen, hauptsächlich aus dem Arsinoites und zumal aus Karanis, die ebenso (d.h. mit Monat, Tag, παρήνεγκε) beginnen. Die allermeisten sind Ostraka aus Karanis (O.Mich.), aber es gibt auch andere Herkunft und auch Papyri. Es geht in der Regel um die Ablieferung von ἄχυρον oder anderen Produkten (Getreide). χόρτος paßt durchaus dazu.

  • 2.

    The name Αὐρήλιος Ἄμμων is a very tentative suggestion. After the initial alpha there is a stroke, which could be explained as an abbreviation mark. The abbreviation α for Αὐρήλιος is occasionally found in documents of the period.

  • 3.

    What is expected in this line is a reference to the year in which the delivery was due, but the surviving letters are not consistent with a year or indiction.
