AD 116 Karanis

Introduction

The text has been updated, following the discovery of two new, small fragments during work for the APIS project. One was stuck on the back of the papyrus itself, and brings a few letters to the left of lines 15-17. The other is P.Mich. inv. nr. 5838c, from another level in the same part of the granary C123. It adds up to 15 letters to the left of lines 17-20. Both add only minor information about the parcels of land involved. (P. Heilporn, 2012)

Notes

  • 15.

[καὶ ὑπὸ κα]ινὴν δ[ι]ώ̣ρυγα, ed. There is space for the article, which fits nicely the traces at the start of the line on the new fragments; the same expression, probably about the same parcel, can be read in P.Mich. 9.556, 16 and has been restituted in its duplicate P.Mich. 9.555, 15; 39.

  • 18.

The restitution [δύο] is based on the available space in the lacunas here and at the start of line 19, and on the total amount of 4 arourai given in line 17, which is itself confirmed by the difference between 10 ar. 11/64 (line 7) and 6 ar. 11/64 (line 12)).

  • 20.

This line has been read with the help of lines 8-9; part of it is of course given exempli gratia.

And by this division which they have made with each other by lot by mutual consent Pnepheros has been allotted and has received as his share from the (arourai) near Patsontis six and one-eighth and one-thirty-second and one-sixty-fourth arourai in six parcels, of which three parcels, amounting to three arourai, are in the Pentekonta and one parcel of one and one-eighth and one-thirty-second and one-sixty-fourth arourai is in the Hollow of the Cavalry, and one aroura is close by the New Canal, and one aroura is in Tatnouei. And Ptolemaios (has received) as his allotted share four arourai of royal land near Patsontis in three parcels, of which the first is of [two and] one-quarter arourai in the Strategikon, the second is of one aroura in the Geeina, and the third is of one-half and one-quarter [arourai] in Tatnouis, and the two and one-half arourai of the Anthian estate . . .
