Notes

  • 1.

In l. 1, (ὑπέρ) is to be read as διά. While the writer clearly wrote (ὑπέρ) on the papyrus, it cannot be doubted that the document requires διά at that position. It introduces the name of the actual payer of the amount due from the onoma (i.e., the fiscal account) of Apollos, son of Dioskoros; see P.Lond. 5.1665.1, SB 20.15013.1 and 4, SB 20.15015.6, SB 24.15975.1, and SB 26.16523.1. The text later (ll. 3–4) implies that the writer copied the information from a register (or from the original receipt), and he may have simply misread the original δ(ιά) as (ὑπέρ), as both might look similar when written by a swift hand. APIS Translation (English)

Apollos, son of Dioskoros, gave on behalf of Phoibammon for the poll-tax of the 2nd indiction three and a half keratia in gold, total 3 1/2 ker., and I am prepared to bring to you the receipt of the polis-steward and to retrieve mine. I, Petros the cashier, agree to this.
