Introduction

List of Aromata and Honey. A list of seven items written on the upper half of a papyrus sheet (8,5x22 cm): the top margin is 4 cm, the blank space at the bottom is 11 cm, at left is a normal 2 cm margin. After the list was written, the sheet was folded vertically toward the center. After the papyrus had been folded, a notch two centimeters in length was cut along the right-hand fold, about one centimeter from the top of the papyrus. A small mark in the second panel of the recto was probably inserted to show the scribe the position of the notch and to remind him to start his first line well below that point. The articles listed here tend to be found together in either a medical or a religious context. A medical context may be the more likely because it is in this area that one can parallel recommendations for the use of specific kinds of honey (see Hipp. 8.432.1222; Dsc. De materia medica 2.82; P.Ryl. 29a, col. I, ll.8,12 ). The hand can be dated to the first half of the third century B.C. The individual letters were carefully formed and each item in the list occupies a single line.

(This papyrus has been digitally edited by Andrea Bernier and Margherita Centenari as part of the Project "DIGMEDTEXT - Online Humanities Scholarship: A Digital Medical Library based on Ancient Texts" (ERC-AdG-2013, Grant Agreement no. 339828) funded by the European Research Council at the University of Parma (Principal Investigator: Prof. Isabella Andorlini). The digital edition is mostly based on the previous edition (A.E. Hanson, SB XIV 12074).)

Notes

  • 6-7.

The mention of the Theangelic honey may connect the text with Zenon and the large number of papyri which have been associated with him (P.Cair.Zen. 59012, l.28; 59680, l.12).
