Title oil account
Author Nemesas and the associate sitologoi
Summary This side contains an account prepared by the supervisor of an oil-press, perhaps as part of the routine business of an estate. He acknowledges receipt of safflower, doubtless in the form of seed, to be converted to oil in conformity with a standard conversion rate, 9 artabas = 1 metretes. He then specifies the quantities of oil returned in five shipments by donkey-convoy.

Support/Dimensions 1 papyrus ; 13.5 x 14.8 cm.
Condition This medium brown papyrus is broken off at the bottom. Perhaps as much as one-half of the column has been lost at the bottom. The major difficulty of transcription arises from the severe abrasion of the ink along the left side of the column. This small piece of papyrus was cut from the roll at some later time in order to accommodate a short account which was placed on this side.

Hands Text on this side written in a hand contemporary to that of the recto. Free margins remain on the left (1 cm.), at the top (1.5 cm.), and at the bottom (3.3 cm.). At the right, horizontal strokes at ends of letters are extended to the edge of the papyrus as space fillers.

APIS Translation (English)

"I received from Theogiton 164 1/2 art. of safflower, and through Euthyches from Eleusis 31 1/5 art. Total 195 1/2 1/5 art., at the rate of 9 art. per metretes, i. e. 21 1/2 1/4 metretai. Of these I supplied on the 1st shipment, through Melas the donkey-driver, 5 metr. 5 metr.; 2nd shipment, through Didymos, 8 metr.; 3rd shipment, through Alexandros the donkey-driver, 4 metr.; 4th shipment, through the same likewise, 2 1/4 metr.; 5 shipment, through the same likewise, 2 1/2 1/4 metr. Total 22 metr. Of these I provided 1 keramion for Panos."
