Summary This private letter is entirely concerned with a matter of business. The writer's attention is concentrated on the need of money to defray expenses and of papyrus for producing accounts, or a register of other official papers. The drift of the text suggests that he is a partner in a small firm of scribes, perhaps a family enterprise, specializing in such work.

Condition The upper portion of this papyrus has been lost along a most irregular tear, which has eliminated almost all of line 1 as well as the beginning and end of line 2 and has rendered the end of line 3 practically illegible.

Hands The hand is a fluent but awkward cursive.From line 5 to the end of the text the left margin measures 1 cm., whereas lines 3 and 4 extrude slightly into the margin. Below the text is a margin of 1.2 cm. The space left blank on the right varies from .3 cm. to 1 cm.

APIS Translation (English)

". . . having sent us . . . obols, Onnophris went abroad. He left us, but nevertheless don't worry about this. If you find someone coming this way, you will send us 40 drachmas. You will request 1 drachma for us for writing a covering letter for the accounts, because I have purchased papyrus for the letter.;I pray for your good health. Phamenoth 4.;And you will make a gift of a papyrus roll to Sarapion, the brother of Dionysios, again for the accounts."
