Introduction

The papyrus consists of two columns of text with a wide upper margin. A correction in col. ii line 5 appears to be in the same hand as the rest of the text, suggesting that it was the work of the original scribe. Three wedge-shaped line-fillers are present in col. i lines 2, 11, and 13. Grenfell & Hunt conjecture a fourth line-filler in col. ii line 9.

Notes

  • 8.

The word order discrepancy is unique; the manuscript tradition has κατ' ἀνδραγαθίην Καρκηδονίων.

  • 10.

The manuscript tradition has ὡς ἑσσοῦτο rather than ἥσσωτο. The ὡς was likely omitted, while ἥσσωτο may be a phonological variant of ἑσσοῦτο. See Gignac, A Grammar of the Greek Papyri of the Roman and Byzatine Periods, vol. 1, p. 209 and 242.

  • 13.

The paragraphos indicates a hard stop after θάνομαι.

  • 2.

The phrase εν τῆι Σικελίηι is omitted by the Roman family. Wilson speculates either that the phrase was included in Herodotus' Carthaginian source (if he was citing one), or that Herodotus mean to distinguish between this battle in Sicily and the battle between the Greeks and the barbarians at Salamis. See Wilson, Herodotea: Studies on the text of Herodotus (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2015), p.144

  • 7.

The Roman family has λέγειν for λέγεται. Cobet deletes the verb.

  • 13.

Abicht and Hude both delete ἐθύετο καί, but Wilson cites this papyrus as evidence for its inclusion in his OCT edition.
